There are few things in life that excite me more than fantasy football. I can't help it - I'm a stat geek. Case in point: At work the other day my co-worker told me about ESPN Page 2's Air-Chair Decathlon (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=decathlon/080821). More specifically, he directed me to the NFL Fantasy Stat Line Quiz (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=decathlon/questions/080821#fantasy), in which you have to guess the player that had those ststs in 2007.

I got seven out of ten right on my first guess. He was, well, surprised. I guess disgusted could also apply. But I was surprised. In fact, I was a little disappointed. I should have known all ten, considering how much I study fantasy football numbers, rankings, etc.

But all of this brings me to my main point: an analysis of my fantasy roster for the upcoming season. Unlike the majority of fantasy drafts, mine took place a few weeks now. Here is a quick glance at my roster:

QB - Peyton Manning
RB - Fred Taylor
RB - Thomas Jones
RB/WR - Selvin Young
WR - Randy Moss
WR - Chad Johson
WR/TE - Larry Fitzgerald
TE - Jason Witten
OP - Nate Burleson
LB - Lofa Tatupu
D/ST - Vikings
K - Shayne Graham

Bench - Julius Jones, Javon Walker, L.J. Smith-a, Kurt Warner-b

a-originally drafted Vince Young, but cut him and picked up Smith
b-originally drafted Tarvaris Jackson, but cut him and picked up Warner

I also have a trade that should go through tomorrow evening, in a straight up swap of Javon Walker for Bobby Engram. And yes I realize Engram is out for a few weeks. But Walker has bust written all over him, and I hate that pick when I made it. I can store Engram on the IR, pick up another running back, and be in business.

As for my roster, in short, it has plenty of receivers, but is definitely lacking in the running back department. I got stuck with the last pick in the first round, and therefore back-to-back selections with the way the pendulum swings. So I nabbed Manning and Moss with my first two spots. But by the time it got back to me, Johnson and Fitzgerald just looked so much better than the available cast of running backs. So I grabbed them.

I sent out feelers in my league to see if anyone would be interested in swapping Fitzgerald for a solid back, but the best offers I got in return were Ronnie Brown and Rudi Johnson, not nearly enough for Fitzgerald. I had originally been somewhat desperate to trade Fitzgerald for a top running back. But the more time I have had to think about it, the more I am starting to like my lineup. I've got four guaranteed 1,000 yard receivers (Moss, Johnson, Fitzgerald, Witten), as well as wild cards in Burleson and (most likely) Engram. Smith should have a solid season with Kevin Curtis sidelined.

Plus, with Brett Favre in New York, that will take some of the heat off of Jones in the backfield. His brother, Julius, should surprise people on my Seahawks this season. Young is probably the weakest player on my team, simply because Denver always turns over running backs.

Manning, Tatupu, the Vikings and Graham are among the top three at their respective positions. So, on the surface, the biggest weakness of my team is the running game. But I am confident I will have a playoff team in a few months. You can bank on more than a few updates during the season.
