So I wake up today and turn on ESPN. Nothing different about that. But what I hear first on the TV is that Brett Favre has decided to retire – again. And this time apparently it's for real.
My first thought is that it's probably about a year too late. Though, I had no problem with Favre coming back to play. In fact, I argued (and still stand by this) that the Packers should have welcomed Favre back, and traded Aaron Rodgers. They would gotten a good package for a young quarterback loaded with potential. Plus, they had just drafted Brian Brohm, who was projected as the No. 1 overall pick in 2007, had he come out. But, as we all know, they did not do that.
And so, Favre ended up in New York, playing his final season for the Jets. Was the one season a success? Well, yes and no, in my opinion. But if you ask most Jets fans, they'll tell you they couldn't wait to get rid of the guy. Wait a second. Hold on here. This is Brett Favre. Maybe the greatest quarterback ever. And you want him gone? Why exactly? To go with Kellen Clemens? Brett Ratliff perhaps?
Come on New York fans. Shut up and actually look at the facts here. With Favre leading the team the Jets rebounded from a 4-12 disaster to a 9-7 season. They finished just outside the playoffs, but really, with that team, I think they overachieved. New York has nothing that scares me now that Favre is gone. Yes Thomas Jones had a career season, but that was mainly because defenses feared Favre. You don't think with Clemens (or whatever bum they get to fill his spot), that defenses won't just play eight or nine in the box and stomp out the rushing attack?
Let's see the Jets' options here. They have Clemens, Ratliff and Erik Ainge on the roster. Terrible. The available free agent quarterbacks look like this: Kurt Warner (not happening), Matt Cassel (never happening), Kerry Collins (doubt it), Rex Grossman (you think Favre had it bad with Jets fans...), J.P. Losman (next...), Byron Leftwich (actually a decent option), Ryan Fitzpatrick (probably not), Kyle Boller (I just threw up a little in my mouth) and Jeff Garcia (about as old as Favre). The rest aren't even worth mentioning.
What about a trade? That is certainly possible, but I'm not sure what quarterbacks are on the market. Maybe guy like Derek Anderson. But really? And the draft offers little, unless you consider Mark Sanchez and Josh Freeman guys that can be like Matt Ryan and step in right away. So ... I guess Leftwich is the man? Ouch.
I think any way you slice this, the Jets take a step back. Having three different starting quarterbacks in three seasons in not a recipe for success. There is plenty of offseason still ahead, but at this point, I'm penciling the Jets in for 4-6 wins next year. Then let's see what the fickle New York fans cry about.

Robert Skyles: While it is indeed only two games into the season, your point, is in fact, well taken. The Jets have looked very good so far. I'm still a bit skeptical about how far they will really go this season, but if they continue like this, there's no reason they won't make the playoffs. But let's talk again in December and see where they're at then. Then you can say, "I told you so."
Andrew - I know a lot of things have happened since the time that you wrote your article, but I told you not to count out the Jets during the off season. Granted it's only been two games but still, that is half the amount you had them winning in total, so I just wanted to tell you that I told you so ;-)
Sincerely,
Robert Skyles
I hear M. Vick , may be trying to make a comeback into the big leagues.
Justin: I haven't heard anything about Warner and the Jets. I'll do some research. As far as your question, I'd definitely say Quinn has more upside than Anderson. Quinn has really gotten a bad rep since coming into the NFL, but I think the kid is a future Pro Bowler if put in the right situation. Now, whether the Jets are that situation remains to be seen.
Heard this morning that Kurt Warner wants to the next Jet's QB. I would say that probably won't happen. I do see either Brady Quinn ending up there or possibly Mark Sanchez. I wonder who has more value and upside, Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn?
Joe: We'll see, but I believe Favre is really done this time. But who knows?
Peter: You offer up a lot of options via the draft, some of which are interesting. I think Stafford, obviously, is a longshot at best. Josh Freeman and Nate Davis seem like more realistic options. As a Michigan State fan, I followed Curtis Painter pretty closely at Purdue, and think he is a nice pro prospect. We'll see what the Jets ultimately decide to do.
Robert Skyles: No worries man. We all get heated, and though we are disagreeing on a lot of points, you make a good amount of fair and valid points. Thomas Jones did have a great year, but I don't think he is a great running back. There is a difference. And I love guy (he played a very big role in my fantasy football championship this year). But there are backs that, when you look at them, you realize they are great (Adrian Peterson is the clear, active example), and then there are other guys you realize are just running behind a great line. Jones falls into the latter, but really, it doesn't matter. The guy had a great year last year and should be deservedly praised. David Harris is a nice young linebacker, but I would really hesitate to put him in the same boat as Patrick Willis. Harris racked up 127 tackles as a rookie, but that's deceiving. Tackle totals are, by and large, deceiving. Of the players that finished in the top 10 in the league in total tackles the last two seasons, only four of those 20 players played for playoff teams. Translation: Teams that aren't doing well struggle to get their defense off the field, and the linebackers' tackle totals go way up. That helps explain why D'Qwell Jackson (who?) had 14 more tackles (154 total) than other player in the league this year. He played for the Browns, who could barely sustain a drive. Harris also plays in a 3-4, which relies on the linebackers to be the main tacklers and playmakers. Harris definitely benefits from the system. But, with all that said, is he a nice, young linebacker? Absolutely. Anyway, this argument could last forever. Let's agree to disagree for now. Come next season, we'll see who was right. In the meantime, I hope things are better with your lady. Saturday is Valentine's Day after all.
Oh and im sorry for calling you as smart as a pile of rocks before, I had just gotten into a fight with my girlfriend before reading this so my mood was a little heated at the time. It was definitely uncalled for and not merited, everyone is entitled to their own personal opinion and just because we don't meet at a common end doesn't mean one of us is more right then the other. My fault on that.
All-Pro? Hardly. They have a lot of holes, but they also have some good pieces. To say they are a 4-12 is kind of stupid in my opinion and just tells me that you didn't watch/follow them too closely. I got to watch all of their games and they definitely grew on me from some of their previous years. Let's not forget this was an 8-3 team at one point, beating the Patriots and then undefeated Titans in the following week.
As far as Favre goes, the name alone doesn't put up the numbers, regardless of his name he still played very average football last season, so I'm not quite sure why you insist they are going to be a mess without him. Thomas Jones was the leading rusher in the AFC last year regardless of what excuse you make for his good play, I never suggested he was an all time great but he could definitely merit the term great, I mean if he can't then who really could? Your running back is only going to be as good as your offensive line so that isn't a very good excuse for why he performed well.
As for Leon Washington, you do realize he led the entire NFL in all purpose yards last year? I never suggested him to be an every down back but his job is to change the pace from Thomas Jones and he is a great target for the QB as well. He is among the most electrifying player makers in football along with guys like Devin Hester, Darren Sproles and Joshua Cribbs. Neither Coles nor Cotchery are elite NFL receivers, however both are very solid options to have. Their offense is by no means the most fun team to watch in the NFL, but they don't have to be. As long as they can run the football effectively behind that great O-Line and they find someone who can just run the offense at QB, then they will be effective.
Their defense is better then you give them credit for as well. With Favre throwing pick after pick late in the year their defense slipped a lot from what they did earlier in the year. They were ranked in the top 10 through 12 games. If Rhodes isn't the second best FS in football then who is? Antoine Bethea? Reggie Nelson? Brian Dawkins is no longer playing at his elite level, I searched and can't find a FS outside of Ed Reed who is better. Saying David Harris is nothing special just tells me you don't watch enough of the Jets, he is going to be a very special player, and if you check his rookie season his stats were pretty much on pace with that of Patrick Willis (Harris only started 9 games). Add someone like Bart Scott and you have a LB core of Pace, Harris, Scott, and Gholston/Thomas, not best in the league but it's very solid. Gholston is a whole different topic, it should be interesting to see what Ryan decides to do with him.
As for their "vaulted secondary", when did I ever proclaim that? They have a top 5 CB in Revis and monster FS in Rhodes, besides that they definitely need help back there. They were getting burned because of their lack of a 2nd CB and they need a better SS then Abram Elam. I am not going to guarantee anything from them but I fully expect that this will be a team competing for a WC spot. To say anything is definitive before the season even starts is just stupid, I mean one look at the Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, and Miami Dolphins of last year is enough to tell you that.
JETS QB sitch is big deal to all JETS Fans. WHile I think they should draft another QB this yr they shoudl really give a shot to one of the guys on their roster.
Clemens always had Pennington nipping at his heals, nto a great situation for confidence
Ratliff had a heck of a pre-season and deserves a shot for it
Ainge had a great career at UT though not heralded, kind of like Brady at Michigan.
In the Draft I see the following:
Stafford reminds me of Drew Brees, if they can't get him then Nate from Ball St. is the pick for his strong Arm and leadership, Rothlisberger like.
Long shots in the Brady mold could also be Painter and Carpenter.
I might even sign Mike Teel as an undrafted free agent, he worked with some talent at Rutgers, better talent might get better results. Plus he's used to the NYC media and weather.
Goodbye Brett, see you next season.
Shae Cronin: Thanks. I truly think the Packers would have been better off doing that. But Rodgers has shown he's more than capable, so I think they'll be fine regardless.
Robert Skyles: First of all, I do watch football. And I actually saw most of the Jets' games this year. And before you insist on saying I'm as smart as a pile of rocks, why don't you consider reality, instead of this All-Pro team you've built the Jets up to be. First of all, defenses did have to respect Favre because, 22 interceptions or not, he's still Brett Favre. A three-time MVP who can burn you. Now, to call Thomas Jones and Leon Washington both great backs is quite a reach. Jones was the beneficiary of Favre and an improved offensive line (you're right, it is one of the better ones in the league). Washington is no more than a change-of-pace back, good for 5-10 touches sprinkled throughout the game. He physically can't handle more than that. Cotchery looks like a keeper, but Coles is overrated. Their offense doesn't scare me. Defensively, they have some nice pieces (Jenkins, Revis and Rhodes). But to call Rhodes the second best free safety in football is a little much. And David Harris and Calvin Pace are nothing special. I don't know what you see in this defense, but it's nothing great. I'm sure Ryan will improve it, but last year they gave up more than 22 points per game and more than 234 passing yards per game (fourth-worst in the league). Their run defense ranked in the top 10, but this so-called vaunted secondary you write about got scorched. Now look at the team's schedule next year: games against Tennessee, Indianapolis, Carolina, Jacksonville, New Orleans and Tampa Bay (all losable games), on top of their division schedule. The Jets will struggle to win eight games. Just watch.
This Andrew Lovell guy is about as smart as a pile of rocks. I am a Giants fan so I couldn't care less about the Jets but c'mon, how how stupid do you have to be to claim that teams fear a guy who threw as many TDs as he did INTs (22 that is). Honestly, do you even watch football? The Jets most likely would have made the playoffs if they didn't rely on Favre those last 4-5 games and started running the ball more to Thomas Jones and Leon Washington.
As for them being bad next season, they have one of the best O-Lines in football (check the stats), two great running backs, and two good receivers. Defensively they are pretty damn impressive, the best pure NT in football, a top 5 CB who's only 23, the best FS in football outside of Ed Reed, a very good young ILB, and some nice pieces at OLB. Their DEs could use a little work but they are good against stopping the run and Ellis was their sacks leader last year. Not to mention bringing in Rex Ryan is only going to make them better, and he could possibly bribe some of his Ex. Ravens to the team (Bart Scott, Dawan Landry, Jim Leonhard, Ray Lewis,).
Now lets look at some of the QBs that led their teams to the playoffs this year. Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, Kurt Warner, Kerry Collins, Gus Frerotte/Tavaris Jackson, and Chad Pennington. Now how many of them did you consider successful starters at this time last year? A good running game and good defense gets you to and through the playoffs, not a stud QB. Ben Roethlisberger, the SB winning QB, had a 80.1 QB rating last year, good for 24th in the league, not exactly stud like numbers.
Honestly, put a little bit more thought and intelligence into what you write. By the way, GO G-MEN in 09, coming back with a vengeance and hungrier then ever.

Very good points. Thanks for the post.
