This is something I've wanted to do for quite some time. Simply put, I've been interested to see which NFL teams have achieved the most success over the last decade. I expected the top overall team to be the New England Patriots, so it was no surprise when the statistics proved just that. The rankings after that, however, were pretty interesting.
Essentially, here's everything I took into account in ranking the teams: Combined regular season record, combined playoff record, playoff appearances, division titles, Super Bowl appearances and record, number of 10-win seasons and number of 10-loss seasons. The records date back to the first week of the 2000 season and are updated through four weeks of this season.
This took me a good number of hours to compile, so all your thoughts are appreciated. Agree? Disagree? Post away.
1. New England Patriots: 105-43, 14-3 playoffs, 3-1 Super Bowl, six playoff appearances, six division titles, seven 10-win seasons, one 10-loss season - This list of achievements speaks for itself. New England has officially clinched the title of "Team of the Decade."
2. Pittsburgh Steelers: 96-51-1, 10-4 playoffs, 2-0 Super Bowl, six playoff appearances, five division titles, six 10-win seasons - The Steelers have to rank second because of their playoff accomplishments, which include two Super Bowl victories.
3. Indianapolis Colts: 105-43, 7-7 playoffs, 1-0 Super Bowl, eight playoff appearances, five division titles, eight 10-win seasons, one 10-loss season - You could make the argument for the Colts in the No. 2 spot, but I put Pittsburgh there by virtue of their two Super Bowl wins, compared to Indy's one.
4. Philadelphia Eagles: 94-52-1, 10-7 playoffs, 0-1 Super Bowl, seven playoff appearances, five division titles, six 10-win seasons, one 10-loss season - Philly is easily the best team of this decade that hasn't won a Super Bowl. They are absolutely top-five material.
5. New York Giants: 84-64, 6-5 playoffs, 1-1 Super Bowl, six playoff appearances, three division titles, five 10-win seasons, two 10-loss season - The Giants sit with the Patriots and Steelers as the only teams this decade to reach at least two Super Bowls.
6. Baltimore Ravens: 86-62, 7-4 playoffs, 1-0 Super Bowl, five playoff appearances, one division title, five 10-win seasons, two 10-loss seasons - Baltimore is a consistent contender, year in and year out. Plus, they have a Super Bowl title to boot.
7. Green Bay Packers: 86-62, 3-5 playoffs, five playoff appearances, four division titles, five 10-win seasons, two 10-loss seasons - Green Bay has, somewhat quietly, put together a nice decade run, highlighted by five 10-win seasons and four division crowns.
8. Seattle Seahawks: 78-70, 4-5 playoffs, 0-1 Super Bowl, five playoff appearances, four division titles, three 10-win seasons, two 10-loss seasons - Say what you want about the division, but only seven teams have more playoff wins this decade than the Seahawks.
9. Denver Broncos: 89-59, 1-4 playoffs, four playoff appearances, one division title, four 10-win seasons, zero 10-loss seasons - Denver actually has the fifth-most regular season wins this decade. But they slide because of their glaring disappointment in the playoffs.
10. Tennessee Titans: 83-65, 2-5 playoffs, five playoff appearances, three division titles, five 10-win seasons, two 10-loss seasons - Like Denver, Tennessee is another great team that has struggled in the postseason.
11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 76-72, 3-4 playoffs, 1-0 Super Bowl, five playoff appearances, three division titles, three 10-win seasons, two 10-loss seasons - They might be terrible now, but the Bucs are one of only a handful of Super Bowl winners this decade.
12. Chicago Bears: 77-71, 2-3 playoffs, 0-1 Super Bowl, three playoff appearances, three division titles, three 10-win seasons, three 10-loss seasons - Chicago was all over the place this decade, but they get placed here because of their Super Bowl appearance.
13. Minnesota Vikings: 76-72, 2-3 playoffs, three playoff appearances, two division titles, two 10-win seasons, three 10-loss seasons - The Vikings are in the same boat as the Bears. They have been a little up and down.
14. San Diego Chargers: 74-74, 3-4 playoffs, four playoff appearances, four division titles, three 10-win seasons, three 10-loss seasons - A bad start of the decade followed by a good end of the decade results in this middle ranking for San Diego.
15. New Orleans Saints: 74-74, 2-2 playoffs, two playoff appearances, two division titles, two 10-win seasons, one 10-loss season - With the Saints sitting at an even .500, putting them right in the middle makes sense.
16. St. Louis Rams: 70-78, 3-4 playoffs, 0-1 Super Bowl, four playoff appearances, two division titles, three 10-win seasons, three 10-loss seasons - As awful as they are now, the Rams were a championship contender in the early part of the decade.
17. Carolina Panthers: 71-76, 5-3 playoffs, 0-1 Super Bowl, three playoff appearances, two division titles, three 10-win seasons, one 10-loss season - Other than their Super Bowl season, there's not a whole lot to like about the Panthers.
18. New York Jets: 74-74, 2-4 playoffs, four playoff appearances, one division title, three 10-win seasons, three 10-loss seasons - I had forgotten the Jets made four postseason appearances. That's probably because they only collected two playoff wins.
19. Miami Dolphins: 73-75, 1-3 playoffs, three playoff appearances, two division titles, four 10-win seasons, three 10-loss seasons - If the Dolphins hadn't put up a 1-15 season, they'd probably be a few places higher.
20. Jacksonville Jaguars: 71-77, 1-2 playoffs, two playoff appearances, two 10-win seasons, four 10-loss seasons - The mid-to-late 1990's were better for the Jaguars than this decade has been. Only two playoff appearances? Yuck.
21. Dallas Cowboys: 73-75, 0-3 playoffs, three playoff appearances, one division title, two 10-win seasons, four 10-loss seasons - Too low for America's Team? Not according to the numbers. Sorry Dallas fans.
22. Atlanta Falcons: 68-78-1, 2-3 playoffs, three playoff appearances, one division title, two 10-win seasons, three 10-loss seasons - A few tough years before 2008's bounceback campaign have the Falcons down in the lower half.
23. Kansas City Chiefs: 66-82, 0-2 playoffs, two playoff appearances, one division title, two 10-win seasons, three 10-loss seasons - A once proud and dominant franchise only produced two playoff appearances and no playoff wins in this entire decade.
24. Washington Redskins: 68-80, 1-2 playoffs, two playoff appearances, one 10-win season, three 10-loss seasons - What does a boatload of Daniel Snyder's money get you? Apparently just one playoff win in 10 years.
25. Arizona Cardinals: 53-94, 3-1 playoffs, 0-1 Super Bowl, one playoff appearance, one division title, six 10-loss seasons - Last season's Super Bowl run isn't enough to offset nine years of futility.
26. Oakland Raiders: 58-90, 4-3 playoffs, 0-1 Super Bowl, three playoff appearances, three division titles, three 10-win seasons, six 10-loss seasons - After three straight playoff years, the Raiders have followed with six consecutive 10-loss seasons. Ugh.
27. San Francisco 49ers: 63-85, 1-2 playoffs, two playoff appearances, one division title, two 10-win seasons, four 10-loss seasons - Just a boatload of mediocrity here. Next.
28. Cincinnati Bengals: 61-86-1, 0-1 playoffs, one playoff appearance, one division title, one 10-win season, four 10-loss seasons - The Bengals had one nice season this decade. Other than that they've been ... well ... the Bengals.
29. Buffalo Bills: 61-87, three 10-loss seasons - Congratulations to the Bills for having the weakest resume of any NFL team this decade. No playoff appearances or wins. No 10-win seasons. No hope.
30. Cleveland Browns: 52-96, 0-1 playoffs, one playoff appearance, one 10-win season, six 10-loss seasons - It's been tough going for the Browns, who have only earned one wild card berth this decade.
31. Houston Texans: 42-74, four 10-loss seasons - Keep in mind that the Texans have only been around since 2002, so this rating may not be entirely fair. Still, this young franchise hasn't put up a banner season yet.
32. Detroit Lions: 41-107, seven 10-loss seasons - Much like the Patriots at No. 1, the Lions at No. 32 was pretty much a foregone conclusion. But hey, there's always next decade.
