Today marks such a beautiful period in the world of sports. It’s a time that can be enjoyed, a time where I can find guaranteed pleasure on the weekends, and a time when I can sit back and relax while listening to hasty arguments and laughing. No, I’m not talking about the hockey season start up. Not the 2008 World Series. Not the fast paced start to the Champions League. No guys, this is the beginning of the end for the atrocious and nauseating franchise that is, the Dallas Cowboys.

Whether you know that I’m an intense Redskins enthusiast or not isn’t important. The important thing is that you notice what is happening to the Dallas Cowboys right now and you realize that they should be considered a ‘bust’ for this season. Am I jumping to conclusions? Probably so, but I just can’t hold in my excitement anymore.

I’m a huge sport media nut so I read just about every ineffectual sport magazine there is. With that said, reading about this Dallas Cowboys team all off-season and having to go through all the Super Bowl predictions was absolutely horrid. Not only do Super Bowl predictions by no-name wannabe handicappers make me furious to begin with, when the morons are picking Dallas to win it all I get really heated. However, I cannot say that I disagreed with the lame writers that did pick Dallas. I mean, they do have some of the most talented players at each position and they had a great season in 2007. Why not consider them for the NFC Champs?

Today we continue to see the team all over the television and in the papers; however the analysis and discussions are going in the complete opposite direction. Down goes Roy Williams; what’s the secondary to do? Terrance Newman goes down; now we’re really in trouble. Adam Jones is back to being Pacman; who’d-uh-thunk it? Terrell Owens is acting like he always does when the team records a loss. And now the all-mighty Tony Romo goes down with an itty bitty finger injury (I know it’s probably awful and there’s no way I could handle, but it’s Romo and I’ll criticize him until the day he retires). So who is to blame for the downward spiral?

  • I think the problems first started out with keeping Wade Phillips as the Cowboys’ head coach. No, Wade did nothing to deserve being released but he’s just not the man to run the show in Big D. It could be argued that no one is the right man to run the show in Dallas, because of the simple fact that everything is done by Jerry Jones. I also find it a little odd when coordinators are paid an immense amount of money (see: Jason Garrett) by the owner in order to keep them around and serve as the next head coach. How awkward is that?  Wade serves as a puppet in Dallas and I would expect him to be in new colors come next year.

  • Then you have the signings of convicts, Tank Johnson and Adam “Pacman” Jones. Tank Johnson might not be so bad because he actually has the brains to realize that this is his last chance. But signing Pacman; are you crazy? Jerry Jones continues to follow his traditional thinking of bringing in bad seeds will help him to be portrayed as a savior. Need I say more about what this did to the organization?

  • Unlike the first two issues, injuries are almost unavoidable. When Roy Williams goes down (I mean the non-covering safety) and Terrance Newman is sitting out, that leaves your secondary in pretty weak shape. Williams is a blitzing threat and Newman was their best defensive back, so yes it does cause some concern. The Cowboys’ defense is now based on the fact that the Cowboys’ offense puts up at least 30 points a game and the defense then earns some wiggle room. Good luck with that.

  • Tony Romo does fall under the injury category but, like I said before, I go pretty hard on this guy. When a 234-year old Brett Favre calls you up and tells you to play, you better not be sitting your 20-something year old rear end on the bench. And even more of a reason for Romo to go out there with or without his pinky is that Brad Johnson is his backup, and he’s older than Brett Favre. And must I add the ever-lasting gag about Tony Romo; he’s the choke artist that has never won a playoff game.

  • Then Jerry Jones goes off and makes the interim Lions’ G.M. look like a master mind at work. Jones sent some five picks to Detroit, including a 2009 first rounder, for wide receiver Roy Williams. Williams is an awesome talent and I feel like he can be one of the best in this league now that he is out of Detroit, but I cannot imagine giving up so much. He adds depth, possibly your team’s receiving future, but you give up crucial draft picks that could turn into anything (see: Johnny Unitas, Tom Brady, etc.). I think both teams got what they wanted, but in no way am I convinced that it was necessarily smart.

  • And of course, T.O. Possibly the worst teammate in the entire National Football League, Terrell Owens continues his pathetic and embarrassing ways. Who in their right mind would ever want T.O. on their team? Don’t get me wrong, he’s an amazing player, but I often feel the value of his talent is no where near the cost of his behavior. This guy will unfortunately get to the Hall, but he will forever be remembered as the biggest team disturbance.

I and I am satisfied with ceasing my never-ending rant right about... there. Are the Cowboys as bad as I portray them? Not even close. In fact, the Cowboys are in the toughest division in all of football and they have an above .500 record. However, I will take every opportunity I have to bash the Cowboys and kick them while they’re down. If you’re a Cowboys fan I apologize, but I honestly don’t mean it. For the hype that surrounded this team and all the ex-Cowboy commentators that think the Dallas players are super heroes, I enjoy laughing each and every Sunday. This team could easily win the remainder of their games, maybe only the next six, get into the playoffs and go on to win the Super Bowl. But I think the damage is already done and there is no such room for error in the brutal NFC East. I look forward to watching the Redskins coast and the Cowboys crumble.
