Has it really been a month since the NFL season started? Four full weeks already?? A quarter of the regular season??? Where oh where does the time go. But alas, this is no time for sorrow over the fact that the NFL season goes WAY too quickly. Week four offered plenty of golden nuggets, highlighted by my Seahawks throttling the 49ers, 23-3. With that win, Seattle improved to 3-1 on the season. The Seahawks join the Bucs and Lions (what?) as the the only 3-1 squads in the NFC at the moment. Obviously Dallas and Green Bay are cruising along at 4-0, but I don't think the Seahawks are any less talented than the Cowboys or Packers. If it wasn't for a (ridiculous) botched hand off (that gives me nightmares still) against the Cardinals, Seattle would be undefeated right now as well. The Bucs and Lions ... well, I have no idea what to make of them. In the NFC, both are legitimate playoff contenders. I like Detroit more simply because of their offensive prowess. Tampa Bay is too soft on offense to begin with, and that was before Cadillac Williams' horrific injury against Carolina. Over in the AFC New England and Indianapolis remain undefeated at 4-0. At this point you have to think it's going to be the two of them in the AFC Championship again. Denver is underachieving, but I expect that to change. The Steelers were exposed by Arizona on Sunday, and I loved every second of it. I hate the Steelers. You better believe I've had the week five match up between Seattle and Pittsburgh circled since the day the schedule was released. But I digress. Right now there are six teams that look like legitimate title contenders - Patriots, Colts, Broncos, Cowboys, Packers and Seahawks. I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that one of these six squads takes home the Lombardi Trophy this season. Other thoughts and musings from the weekend that was: - It looks like the Super Bowl hangover is back in effect for the loser. This season, it's the Chicago Bears. They've already gone to their back up quarterback (Brian Griese), who doesn't appear to have any more control of the offense than the opening day starter (Rex Grossman). The offense is bad this year, and trading Thomas Jones was a big mistake. And the team's bread and butter for the past few seasons, its defense, has been just average this season. That's not exactly a recipe for success, even in the weak NFC. The Bears are definitely in trouble this year. - I guess I was wrong about the Chargers. After they blew their lead to Kansas City on Sunday, I finally convinced myself that Norv Turner truly has ruined this team. Note to Turner: give Tomlinson the rock and get out of his way. LT should be touching the ball at LEAST 30 times a game. Give him 20-30 carries, and throw it his way 5-10 times. Jesus, even let him throw the ball a few times. The guy is easily the best pound-for-pound player in the league. How can he not be getting the ball over and over and over? Turner has officially taken a 14-2 team and turned it into an 8-8 squad. What a shame. - I'm not sure how he does it, but Vince Young really is just a winner. Surprisingly, I've just never been a huge fan of his style of play. I've always had a tendency to prefer straight drop back and pass quarterbacks. But Young's style isn't even scrambler like young Steve McNair, Donovan McNabb or Michael Vick. It's more like backyard team captain style. It's his team, and he's going to get the win. Period. That's why he's slowly winning me over. And I'm already warming to the idea of seeing the damage he could do in the playoffs. - The Dolphins are a train wreck, pure and simple. They lost again this past Sunday, falling 35-17 to Oakland. Now, I realize the Raiders are improved this season, but come on. Getting doubled up by the Raiders is embarrassing and definitely represents the low point of the season. I suspect there will only be lower points though from here on out. The offense is anemic (save for Ronnie Brown, who is putting up great numbers), and the defense is no longer an elite unit. Best thing Dolphins fans can hope for: the number one pick in 2008 and Brian Brohm. That's all I've got for now guys. Check back next week for another edition of Tuesday afternoon hangover, as well as updates throughout the week on the MLB Playoffs. Let's go D'Backs.
