Gammons: Mets hold on to modest hopes
-- by MLB.com today.
For an organization mocked for its development, the Mets have unveiled a bunch of impressive young players. Twenty-year-old Jenrry Mejia has looked good, and he''s displayed such a moving, cutting fastball that Manuel has compared it to Mariano Rivera''s. ("I never compared his future to Rivera''s career," said Manuel, "I was just trying to describe his fastball.") First baseman Ike Davis has been very impressive, going 11-for-22 with two homers. Twenty-one-year old outfielder Fernando Martinez has gone 11-for-19 with a 1.655 OPS. Twenty-year-old shortstop Tejada has started off hitting .364, and he''s played so well defensively, he may split time with Cora at short until Reyes gets back. Twenty-three-year-old left-hander Jon Niese may very well be the fifth starter.

Maine pleased by outing despite results
-- by MLB.com today.
JUPITER, Fla. -- If ever there were an indication of how little proven players concern themselves with results in Spring Training games, it came Sunday afternoon during and after the cameo appearance of John Maine in the Mets'' game against the Marlins. Maine was a shooting star on this baseball afternoon -- emphasis on shooting. He faced eight batters in the fifth inning. The final six reached base, and five of them scored. That, and among the I''m-not-about-to-pull-my-hair-out-over-this thoughts Maine expressed in the aftermath were, "At least I got my work in."

Mets see positives in Perez's start
-- by MLB.com 1 days ago.
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The question is where to put this one. Brief as it was, it seemed to have something to it, some sense of reality. So does this four-inning performance belong in Column A, with the handful of other appearances Oliver Perez has made over his three-plus seasons with the Mets that made his pitching coaches drool and opposing batters melt? Or does it warrant inclusion in Column T, as in tease? Any need to explain? The Mets were leaning heavily toward the column A side Saturday during and after Perez''s second exhibition game start, against remnants of the Tigers'' real batting order. In his first start, he threw strikes and hit bats. This time, he threw strikes and hit spots, encouraging all who recognize how desperately the Mets need an arm other than Johan Santana''s left one.

Inbox: How serious is Reyes' condition?
-- by MLB.com 1 days ago.
Your final point is quite valid. And no one is saying Tejada doesn''t lack experience. His errors last year are not necessarily an issue. Few are the Minor League fields that are so manicured and unflawed as big league fields. But my take on it involves offense. With Carlos Beltran and Reyes out of the lineup, the Mets need as much offense on the field as they can get. Cora is more likely than Tejada to provide it. And Cora is not going to be a liability at shortstop. He readily acknowledges he isn''t Reyes. Neither is Tejada. Cora may not get to balls that Reyes would handle, but he makes the routine plays, and that''s what most managers say they want.

Cora, Tejada competing as Reyes' fill-in
-- by MLB.com 2 days ago.
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Although fewer games remain on the Mets'' Spring Training schedule than when Jose Reyes was preparing to make his return to active duty, the camp, without Reyes, now features more competition. Manager Jerry Manuel and general manager Omar Minaya like to see competition for assignments, even when it doesn''t exist. But Reyes'' absence and the possibility that he will not play for weeks has created a legitimate competition between veteran Alex Cora and non-roster Ruben Tejada. One of them will be primarily in charge of keeping the shortstop position warm for Reyes, though it''s likely each will play a part.

Rain causes cancellation of Mets' game
-- by MLB.com 2 days ago.
PORT ST.LUCIE, Fla. -- The auditions for the No. 5 position in the Mets'' starting rotation go on, unaffected by the rains that caused cancellation of the team''s scheduled game against the Twins on Friday in Fort Myers, Fla. Fernando Nieve and Jon Niese are to pitch Monday -- Nieve starting and Niese relieving -- when the Mets play the Cardinals at Tradition Field at 1:05 p.m. ET, live on MLB.TV. Francisco Rodriguez is to make his spring debut in that game. Nieve and Niese, their roles reversed, pitched Wednesday against the Braves, so they will have normal four days of rest. Monday''s game is to be carried by SNY.

New York Mets' early-season lineup won't be overly imposing without Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran
-- by NY Daily News 2 days ago.
OLLIE IN FORECAST: Friday''s Mets-Twins game was rained out in Fort Myers. Scheduled starter Perez instead will pitch Saturday against the Tigers, with Maine pitching in a "B" game tomorrow. Francisco Rodriguez''s first Grapefruit League appearance is slated for Monday, when Fernando Nieve starts against the Cardinals and fifth-starter front-runner Jon Niese is scheduled to relieve Nieve.

Experts agree rest, diet change are best for Jose Reyes' return to New York Mets
-- by NY Daily News 3 days ago.
The recommended treatment for Jose Reyes'' hyperactive thyroid is rest and a change in diet, not medication, and several New York City endocrinologists said that a cautious, conservative approach like that is the best medicine for the Mets'' shortstop.

Ruben Tejada could be New York Mets shortstop on Opening Day in Jose Reyes' absence
-- by NY Daily News 3 days ago.
Neither GM Omar Minaya nor Manuel mentioned Anderson Hernandez as an option. A trade may not make sense given that Reyes could return a few weeks into the season. Still, the Mets did swing a deal for infielder Wilson Valdez last year after injury depletions and could attempt something similar.

Jason Bay’s tired of the Sox talk, eager to move on with Mets
-- by Providence Journal 3 days ago.
He simply doesn't want to rehash his contract saga with the Red Sox. Bay was set to sign a four-year deal with Boston before the team yanked the deal off the table over health concerns that Bay found specious. Then, the Sox reportedly offered the left fielder a two-year contract with terms that protected the team in event of injury ? despite the fact that Bay has never played less than 145 games in any of his five full seasons. Bay balked and signed with the Mets.

Meet the Met: Bay is fitting right in
-- by Boston.com 3 days ago.
Far from brushing off the questioners, it appeared that Bay was simply stating a fact. He is done with Boston, ready for something new (though the cup of Dunkin' Donuts coffee in his hand perhaps undermined his statement). He has said what he wanted to say, made his transition back to the National League with the Mets. Now, he believes, it's time to look forward.

Omar Minaya: New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes will start season on DL due to overactive thyroid
-- by NY Daily News 4 days ago.
Initial tests at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York had suggested that Reyes could rejoin the Mets this weekend, but follow-up tests showed that the shortstop''s thyroid levels had spiked again once he exercised on Monday and Tuesday. The early-week physical exertion came against the doctors'' and team''s advice, an organization insider said.

Jose Reyes' thyroid denial just latest example of contradiction within New York Mets
-- by NY Daily News 4 days ago.
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Sometimes it seems the harder the Mets try to avoid controversy, the more it finds them. They have practically dedicated 2010 to righting the medical wrongs of last year, thus their "Prevention and Recovery" slogan, and yet they keep finding themselves at odds with their star players.

Frankie's back, but Escobar's shut down
-- by MLB.com 4 days ago.
Such is the status of the late-inning bullpen sequence the Mets projected in January. Escobar would fill the void in the eighth inning that was created on the last day of July 2006, when Duaner Sanchez was injured. Since then, only J.J. Putz filled that role -- rather briefly last season -- with any consistent performance. And now the pitcher whom general manager Omar Minaya thought would be right for the job, the pitcher he guaranteed $1.25 million, is all but guaranteed to begin the season assigned to the disabled list because of weakness in his shoulder.

Red Sox Journal: Sox fans give Bay the business
-- by Providence Journal 4 days ago.
Carter, 27, is on the bubble, fighting for a roster spot, and said that he is getting to the park at 7 a.m. and leaving at 6 p.m. so that he outworks everyone else on the team. He has done very well in limited spring training action for the Mets so far, going 5-for-8 with three home runs.
