We all know the current polls week-to-week, but how does the Pirate clubhouse stand? Let's find out:
---------
1. Jeff Karstens--Texas Tech Red Raiders
Karstens is probably one happy guy right now since his squad is #1 in the land. Yes, he went to school in Lubbock. Why did they beat Texas in that epic game last week? Not because of an unbelievable offense. Because of Jeff Karstens power!!
---------
2. Matt Capps--Georgia Bulldogs
Capps didn't actually attend UGA (#13) but he is from the area and always calls himself a "Georgia boy". One time on "Inside Pirates Baseball" he took viewers on a tour of his house, revealing all kinds of UGA stuff, including a mini-bulldog statue (he was proud that it obeyed when he told it to "stay"). The "Capps Crew" (a few bleacher creatures that hang out near the bullpen in left) have shirts that incorporate the UGA colors and logo as well.
---------
3. Doug Mientkiewicz--Florida State Seminoles
Surprisingly, I just learned Dirty Doug attended FSU. If I were part of the FSU athletic department, I would market the heck out of the fact that the coolest baseball player ever went to the school. The Seminoles are ranked #20 and have Doug 100% behind them, no doubt.
---------
4. Jim Negrych--Pitt Panthers
Alright, Jim is not really even that close to being a Pirate, but he was offensive minor league player of the year and the #20 Panthers are my team. Thankfully for him there are no Bowling Green or Rutgers fans in the organization (to my knowledge). Hopefully, though, Jim can get a break from his winter league team to attend Pitt's first bowl game under Dave Wannstedt (Finally!!).
----------
5. Steve Pearce--South Carolina Gamecocks
Steve has to succumb to Matt Capps' bragging rights, since Pearce's Gamecocks (currently ranked 25th) fell to the UGA Bulldogs earlier this year. Still, he's a lot better off than a few of his teammates...
--------
6. T.J. Beam--Mississippi Rebels
Beam doesn't have too much to brag about, since Ole Miss is sitting way down there at #48. But they did beat Florida!
--------
7. Paul Maholm--Mississippi State Bulldogs
Another Bulldog! Maybe the Bucs need a name change like the Rays. Actually, one could make the argument that Maholm (MSU Bulldogs--#70) and Matt Capps (UGA Bulldogs) are the team's two best pitchers. Let's draft more Bulldogs!
Guess what the mascot of Fresno State (home of our draft pick Justin Wilson--and Tanner Scheppers who turned us down) is? Uh-huh. Bulldogs! Consider Wilson the future ace!
-------
8. Nate McLouth--Michigan Wolverines
Poor, poor Nate. At least he has a Gold Glove to minimize his sorrows. The #78 Wolverines are having their worst season in forever under newly hired coach Rich Rodriguez. Nate didn't go to Michigan, but the rest of the league thought he would (he had committed to the school). Luckily, the Bucs drafted him anyway and Nate changed his mind and went straight to pro baseball.
FAIL
-------
9. John Van Benschoten--Kent State Golden Flashes
It is fitting, I suppose, that JVB attended the school that is ranked #108 in the nation. But he led the nation in homers while playing ball there! Oh yeah, he's a (terrible) pitcher now...
------
10. Ian Snell--Delaware Blue Hens
Snell didn't go to Delaware U but is pretty much the state's athletic pride and joy (he was the 2007 Delaware Athlete of the Year)...that is, until the great Joe Flacco came along. That's pretty much why the Hens are above the rest of these teams....Flacco's a stud.
-----
11. Ross Ohlendorf--Princeton Tigers
OK, so who knows anything about their football team, but Ross is a genius, so he's pretty sweet. Ohlendorf may have something to cheer about in basketball season when the Tigers dominate the Ivy League (they usually do).
------
12. Matt Morris--Seton Hall Pirates
Morris was destined to be ranked last, because he's Matt Morris, but I mean, come on. They're the Pirates.
-------
13. Craig Hansen--St. Johns Red Storm
Another lower-tier Big East basketball school. Hansen was a stud at St. Johns but that hasn't carried over to the major leagues just yet.

Profile Picture

I wrote a couple of weeks ago that I was more excited about the Oklahoma State v. Mizzou game than I had been about any game in a long time.  This week that excitement continues.  Oklahoma State takes on the Texas Longhorns on Saturday.  Like the game two weeks ago both sides are highly ranked; this time quite a bit higher.

It's another tough road game and as pumped as the Tigers fans were two weeks ago, the atmosphere in Austin is sure to be unrelenting.  Fortunately, this OSU team appears to be immune from such influence.  Maybe its because they are so unaccustomed to the stage that they don't know to be nervous, or maybe its because they've already stood up to the pressure of head coach Mike Gundy's infamous rant.  Whatever is motivating this team, lead by their " Four Aces" at QB, WR, RB & TE, it has been going well.  Texas has also been rolling.  It's gonna be good.

I hope its not too good though.  I will most likely be following the game on my phone.  My wife's cousin's wedding starts a half hour before the game and is likely to last longer as it will be a big Indian wedding.  I missed most of the game agaisnt Mizzou two weeks ago because I was with my wife and her family at a religious festival.  The game next month against OU next month is on the same day that we'll be traveling to Michigan for a wedding reception for one of my wife's high school friends.  Depending on what time that game is I'll hopefully be able to catch a little bit of it.

So I'm missing the three biggest games of the year.  This is nothing new as OSU never has this much national TV exposure.  I don't care if I miss the game though, as long as they turn out the same way as they have all season.  Let's hope it works out.

Cowher to Penn State-Not just a Rumor.

Need some toughness in Central PA call Joe Pa.  Need some grit call Joe Pa. Need a guy who knows college football, call Joe Pa.  Need a 71 year old guy trying to enforce the cutting of binge drinking and football player rage disorder. Um, well he has got the 71 year old part.

Look Joe Paterno has been tremendous over the years at Penn State, but his time up. Penn State has officially turned into,   The Program a 1993 film starring James Caan, Halle Berry, Omar Epps, Craig Sheffer, Kristy Swanson, Daniel Lee, and Joey Lauren Adams.

The film the season of the fictional college football team, the ESU Timberwolves as they deal with the pressure to make a bowl game, drug and alcohol abuse, and overall college life. It follows the trials of Coach Sam Winters (Caan), the Heisman Trophy candidate Joe Kane (Sheffer), the freshman running back Darnell Jefferson (Epps), their girlfriends (Berry & Swanson), and other team members.

Change is needed and if Penn State can sustain a brutal three game gauntlet of Wisconsin, Ohio State and Michigan, they may end up in the Bowl Championship game. This would be the perfect time for Joe Paterno to retire. I seriously he has had to coach from the press box the last couple of weeks.

So here are the candidates for this job in my opinion ranked in order that would best fit the Happy Valley atmosphere and get the program to be a perennial powerhouse, not once ever 5 years.

1.      Bill Cowher-

Cowher began his coaching career in 1985 at age 28 under Marty Schottenheimer with the Cleveland Browns. He was the Browns' special teams coach in 1985-86 and secondary coach in 1987-88 before following Schottenheimer to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1989 as defensive coordinator.

He became the fifteenth head coach in Steelers history when he replaced Chuck Noll on January 21, 1992 – but only the second head coach since the NFL merger in 1970. Under Cowher, the Steelers showed an immediate improvement from the disappointing 7-9 season the year before, going 11-5 and earning home field advantage in the AFC after the Steelers had missed the playoffs six times out of the previous seven years. In 1995, at age 38, he became the youngest coach to lead his team to a Super Bowl. Cowher is only the second coach in NFL history to lead his team to the playoffs in each of his first six seasons as head coach, joining Pro Football Hall of Fame member Paul Brown.

In Cowher’s 15 seasons, the Steelers captured eight division titles, earned ten postseason playoff berths, played in 21 playoff games, advanced to six AFC Championship games and made two Super Bowl appearances. He is one of only six coaches in NFL history to claim at least seven division titles.

It has become an article of faith among NFL pundits that the Steelers do not have a bad team two years in a row – they have never lost 10 or more games in consecutive years since the 1970 NFL merger. At the conclusion of the 2005 season, the Pittsburgh Steelers had the best record of any team in the National Football League since Cowher was hired as head coach.

On February 5, 2006, Cowher's Pittsburgh Steelers won Super Bowl XL by defeating the Seattle Seahawks 21-10, giving Cowher his first Super Bowl ring.

2.      Greg Schiano

Greg Schiano is a Penn State man. In 1990, he joined the Penn State staff as graduate assistant, and later served as the defensive backfield coach there from 1991-95. It has been said that Schiano views Paterno as a mentor and idolizes him and the Penn State football program.

Schiano began his coaching career in 1988 as an assistant coach at Ramapo High School. In 1989, he served as a graduate assistant at Rutgers. In 1990, he took the same position at Penn State, and later served as the defensive backfield coach there from 1991 until 1995.

From 1996 to 1998, Schiano was an assistant coach in the NFL with the Chicago Bears. For his first two seasons there, he was a defensive assistant, and then was promoted in his third and final season with the Bears to defensive backfield coach.

He served as defensive coordinator for the University of Miami from 1999 to 2000. In 1999, UM finished the year ranked 12th in the NCAA's Division I-A in points allowed per game (17.2), and in 2000 moved up to 5th (15.5 points allowed per game). His brief 18 month stint at Miami and his roots in New Jersey, made him a candidate for his next position as Rutgers head coach.

On December 1, 2000, Schiano accepted the head coaching position at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. In 2001, his first season as head coach, the Scarlet Knights posted a 2-9 record (0-7 in the Big East), followed by a 1-11 mark (0-7 Big East) in 2002. This was followed by a 5-7 record (2-5 Big East) in 2003. In 2004, Schiano took on defensive coordinator responsibilities as well, and the team finished 4-7 (1-5 Big East). Although Schiano was producing solid recruiting classes, especially by Rutgers standards, his 3-24 record in conference games and 4-17 record in road games in those first four years were a cause for concern for some fans.

But things began to turn around for the program during the 2005 season. That year, the team finished with a 7-4 record, including a 4-3 conference record, and a nationally-televised 37-29 upset win over Pittsburgh and their coach Dave Wannstedt, a long-time friend of Schiano's who hired him while coaching Chicago. At season's end, Schiano and the Scarlet Knights accepted a bid to play in the Insight Bowl against Arizona State University, their first bowl game appearance since the 1978 Garden State Bowl. (Coincidentally, that game was also against Arizona State, and a then-12-year-old Schiano was among the attendees.) During preparations for the Insight Bowl, Schiano signed a new contract, extending his contract through the 2012 season.

In the 2006 season, Schiano's Scarlet Knights achieved their first Top 25 ranking since 1976. Following week four of the college football season, Rutgers with a record of 4-0 was ranked #23 in the Associated Press and Coaches Polls. The team was ranked as high as #6 in the country (BCS standings) with a 9-0 record after a historic win against the Louisville Cardinals, beating them 28-25 in Piscataway. Throughout the season, coach Schiano and Rutgers were featured prominently in both the local and national media, and Schiano's motivational phrase " keep choppin'" became part of the lexicon of college football. Rutgers finished the season with a 10-2 record, the first time they had won ten games since 1976. Following the season, Schiano and the Scarlet Knights accepted an invitation to play Kansas State in the inaugural Texas Bowl, where they would go on to defeat Kansas State 37-10, capturing their first ever bowl win. For his work in the 2006 season, Coach Schiano was awarded several Coach of the Year honors, including the Home Depot Coach of the Year award and the inaugural Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award.

3.      Tom Bradley

An assistant football coach at Penn State University in State College.  A graduate of Penn State and former player for the Penn State Nittany Lions football team, Bradley has been an assistant to coach Joe Paterno since 1979. His title on the Penn State coaching staff is " In charge of defense/cornerbacks" . This is roughly equivalent to being the defensive coordinator with additional responsibility of being the position coach for the cornerbacks. Bradley is widely rumored to be the eventual successor to Paterno who has been the head coach at Penn State since 1966.

In addition to his role with the defense at Penn State, Bradley has been a highly successful recruiter for the Nittany Lions. Coach Bradley served as the lead recruiter for Nittany Lions such as Shane Conlan, Alan Zemaitis, and Justin King. Bradley has coached many All-American and all Big Ten standouts including, LaVar Arrington, Paul Posluszny, and David Macklin.

2. Oklahoma vs Texas
Series Record:
Texas leads 57-39-5.
Trophy: The Golden Hat

This college football rivalry is number one as the fire, passion and hate between the two schools is unlike any other. This game literally stops a state. The teams didn't play from 1907 to 1948 because after the 1907 game, they couldn%u2019t decide which referees to use. The trophy for this game isn't as important as the ownership of the state that comes with a win.

Series Record:
Notre Dame leads 42-31-5
Trophy: The Jeweled Shillelagh
The winner of this game has gone on to win the national title 19 times, plus these two schools have produced 11 Heisman winners.

This is the oldest rivalry in NCAA Division I-A. The teams have met every year since 1907. Before Paul Bunyan's Axe, the teams played for the " Slab of Bacon" , a piece of wood with the word " BACON" . The idea was that the winning team " brought home the bacon" .

Michigan News
New Michigan AD on Rodriguez: 'He's our coach for this season'
-- by USA Today 6 days ago.
Brandon had a lot on his calendar Monday, his first day as Michigan''s athletic director, but acknowledged nothing on his list of things to do was more important than his plan for Rich Rodriguez and college football''s winningest program.
ESPN
-- by ESPN 1 weeks ago.
"Dave is going to be an outstanding athletic director because he knows the university inside and out and he has a great passion for Michigan," Martin said. "When I was driving to the hockey game the other night, I saw him up in the office."
Texas-to-Big Ten Rumors Heat Up -
-- by Fanhouse 5 weeks ago.
Are you guys serious? There are way too many traditional ties in the Big 12 for Texas. Not only does it neither make sense geographically or in terms of style of football, but UT''s two bitter rivals are OU and A&M. For you Big 10 people, this would be like Ohio State leaving behind Michigan to play USC every year in the PAC-10. And another item, though basketball and many other sports may not make much difference whether played in the Big 10 or Big 12, the Big 10 doesn''t play the kind of baseball Texas is used to playing in the Big 12 (or that''s played in the SEC or on the West coast). Baseball may not mean much to the mid-west, but it matters a lot on on the Southern and Western coasts.
Fighting Sioux Club blog
-- by Fighting Sioux 7 weeks ago.
"Their kids get recruited there to win national championships.  I''m sure they are planning on coming here and beating us."  That from Grand Valley State Head Coach Chuck Martin who calls the Sioux football program a mirror image of his own when it comes to quality coaching, great players, and a tradition of excellence.  No surprise that the Sioux will face GVSU again and we''ve been getting some calls about going out to Michigan for the game.  I''ll keep you updated likely on Tuesday as to the possibilities, but feel free to call with any questions.  If you want to keep up with the Lakers this week here''s the link to the Grand Rapids newspaper:  http://www.mlive.com/lakers .  You''ll see a lot of mutual respect between the two programs.
New Michigan State Logo Draws Fire -
-- by Fanhouse 7 weeks ago.
There''s a reason Michigan''s dumb students go to State. First of all, the old logo is horrible and lacking in creativity. Second, a new, better looking logo will help State compete with Michigan for recruits and merchandise sales. We haven''t even seen how the lettering for MSU will be redesigned.
Notre Dame Staff Comes Into Focus -
-- by Fanhouse 10 weeks ago.
From a school legacy standpoint, three of those nine names have Big Ten roots. Elston played at the University of Michigan and was a member of the Wolverines'' 1997 national championship team. He is the only member of the coaching staff who actually played a game at Notre Dame Stadium, in 1994, when the Maize and Blue took down the Irish 26-24 on Remy Hamilton''s last-second field goal. Diaco and Cooks were defensive teammates at Iowa in the mid-90s. Diaco, a two-time All-Big Ten linebacker, was a Butkus Award semi-finalist in 1995 at linebacker. Cooks, who spent the previous four seasons as the defensive backs coach at Wisconsin, was an All-Big Ten strong safety for the Hawkeyes.
Appalachian State Staggers Michigan -
-- by Fanhouse 12 weeks ago.
Hillary barreled to the Michigan 7 and the Mountaineers, incredibly, had a first and goal from Michigan''s 7. Here, Coach Jerry Moore, perhaps sensing the unbelievable was within his grasp, panicked a bit. Rather than run a play and milk the clock, App. State lined up for a 24-yard field goal attempt with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game.

Legally Speaking, Now Is Time to Fire Rich Rodriguez -
-- by Fanhouse 16 weeks ago.
Coach RichRod should be fired now for the good of the Michigan Football program! He should be fired because he is 8 -16, as the Michigan Coach he is a loser end of story! My alma mater does not have to look this bad for the sake of a Coach who does not know how to win in a very mediocre Big Ten (3 wins in Big Ten play in 2 years) The reason you fire him now is so that his type of players/recruits donâ??t do further damage to the program, his under- sized, weak, and slow players (on average they are no faster than the Coach Carr yearsâ?¦except at QBâ?¦..) are not able to compete with the bigger and stronger Big Ten Type player, as evidenced by the way that the defensive line and offensive line as gotten pushed around all season â?¦.giving up a record amount of rushing yards, and not to mention getting burned each and every play in the defensive secondary. The reason you fire him now is because the defense will only be worst next year with the lost of at least two key players, Graham and Warren. He will not win at least 9 games next year or the year after, therefore fire him now and get a 2 year jump on getting back to the right type of system and players needed to win the Big Ten! Once we can again dominate OSU and the Big Ten we canâ??t even think about beating the â??REALâ?? National Powers in the Football World. Until we once again have players like those on the 2006 version of the Michigan Football Team, you know that first overall NFL Draft pick and those great Wide Receivers, and pretty darn good QBâ?¦..the typical type Michigan Players you see when you check the NFL roosters for the last 12 Years. His system does not attract the best overall talent. How many great WVU players are in the NFL from his 7 year tenure at WVU, which is how I measure talent when I want to compare because the Big East in not a powerhouse Football conference historically. How many National Championships did this so-called great Coach win at WVU? How many National Championship Games did his great system propel his teams to? Donâ??t make excuses for this guy any longer. He created the situation the team is in, the cupboard was not bare he ran away the right kind of QBâ?¦(Ryan Mallett now starting at ARK in the SEC) and Offensive linemen (3 of them like Justin Boren..Now starting at OSU) He chooses to try and play a system that he didnâ??t have the players or talent to execute, not smart for such a â??geniusâ?? of a Coach. Why not analyze what it is that the players you have on hand can do, then create a system which would allow them to win more games than they lose, end of story. For all the aforementioned reasons, and more, he should be fired. If he will be fired in one or two years anyway, now is the time.
No Surprise as Ohio State Tops Michigan -
-- by Fanhouse 17 weeks ago.
If that would have been Florida or Texas playing Michigan they would have scored 50 points, But NO, not Ohio State. Not with Jim Hayes, Woodys long lost grandson, playing his conservative, kill time and try not to LOSE game plan. Hard to knock a guy with so many wins, especially against Michigan, but he needs to be told at the end of the season to hire a REAL OC and let him run the offense or else. No matter who they face in the Rose Bowl they will lose by at least 21 points as they do almost every year with Jimmy boys play not to lose mentality. Makes you wonder why he even recrutted Pryor to come there and why Pryor has not transferred. Go Buckeys, but all I can do is hope!
Pickin' on the Big Ten: The Rich Rodriguez Spread Dilemma -
-- by Fanhouse 17 weeks ago.
Watching Michigan struggle is the very definition of "schadenfreude" for fans of all the other Big Ten teams. There''s a reason I stuck the Wolverines with the team name "ALMOST AS GOOD AS WE THINK WE ARE" when I started writing Pickin'' 11 seasons ago. The Wolverines were just coming off Lloyd Carr''s national championship season. The Buckeyes were nearing the tail end of their John Cooper hangover. Wolverine fans never missed a chance to brag up their own team and run down everybody else''s.
Pickin' on the Big Ten: Coping With Buckeye Fatigue Syndrome -
-- by Fanhouse 18 weeks ago.
Two teams, two philosophies, two different directions. Michigan could not seem more out of sorts right now. Apart from punting, it''s hard to think of one thing they''re doing well. The Wolverines are still a threat to move the ball and score points, but there''s a good reason you don''t hear Tate Forcier''s name as much as you did just a month ago.
Pickin' on the Big Ten: Iowa Isn't Concerned About Your Scorn -
-- by Fanhouse 20 weeks ago.
Iowa reminds me of the little engine that could story. With Iowa being one of the smallest schools in the Big 10 if no the smallest it shows that good coaching like they have counts for a lot. They don''t have the big school draw like an OSU or Michigan but good coaching will always pull good athletes and Iowa seems to always pull them in. This old Iowa farm boy is proud of his Hawkeyes win or lose but this year the smile is bigger and the chest sticking out farther with pride for the way my school is playing. God Bless you Hawkeyes.
Pickin' on the Big Ten: Sorting Saturday -

If the wheel of karma is spinning the way it ought to, the Wolverines are going to get crushed in this game. Their offensive line in the second half of last week''s Delaware State game was made up entirely of sousaphone players from the marching band, for crying out loud. And was that Mary Sue Coleman, the president of the university, running back punts in the fourth quarter?
Big Ten Title Race Far From Over -
-- by Fanhouse 21 weeks ago.
Don''t forget that Iowa spotted Michigan its first touchdown and still found a way to come out of the game with a win. Don''t worry though, Michigan still holds a 40-11-4 all time advantage over the Hawkeyes. So I guess your team is still better. (but not this year) Iowa has lost a lot of games over the years to Michigan because of turnovers. It''s part of the game. So baby whaa.
Purdue Exercises Pryor Restraint -
-- by Fanhouse 22 weeks ago.
Face the facts Buckeye fans, Tressel sold his soul to get Pryor to come to OSU and he''s going to be the QB for 4 yrs. He proved that last year in 1 of the 2 most classless acts ever by a coach,in Todd Boeckman being the only starter to loose his job after the USC game last. The other being Mike Ditka not letting Walter Payton score in the Super Bowl. I''m a die hard Buckeye fan, but Pryor just don''t get it. They say they need to adjust the playbook for him, B.S. if he don''t get it after 1 1/2 years, he''s not going to get it. And for you Michigan fans here bashing, just remember he was almost yours as well.
BCS Title Could Be an All-SEC Affair -
-- by Fanhouse 22 weeks ago.
Second, the SEC voted unanimously in 2006 in the coaches poll to have Florida play Ohio State in the BCS title game, using the argument, as widely reported in the press, that Michigan had already played Ohio State and lost. So you would be asking the SEC to either admit it was hypocritical then or hypocritical now, since it would now have to take the other side of the same argument. No one in the SEC would be willing to admit that they are just self-serving liars, which would be the obvious inference, so they would have to vote for someone other than the SEC championship game loser as the #2 team.

The Buckeyes will learn what Michigan did last week: Indiana is no gimme. I don''t think Ohio State loses this game, but you might have a hard time finding a unopened bottle of Pepto-Bismol in Columbus after this one is over.
